In the music industry, women are consistently underrepresented, particularly in songwriting and production. While there's been a notable increase in female artists on streaming charts and in festival lineups, significant challenges persist in leadership roles and access to resources.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Representation and Streaming:

  • In 2024, female artists accounted for about 30% of the most-streamed songs, a significant increase from 16% in 2017.

  • This suggests a growing presence of women in the music industry, particularly in streaming platforms where audience reach is more democratic.

  • However, even with this increase, parity between male and female artists remains distant.

Underrepresentation in Creative Roles:

  • Studies have shown that women make up a small percentage of songwriters and producers.

  • For example, one survey found that only 14.4% of songwriters were women in 2021.

  • Similarly, another study indicated that less than 3% of producers were female.

Challenges Faced by Women:

  • Women in music often face issues like gender-based harassment, ageism, lower pay, and underrepresentation.

  • Some studies have revealed that a significant percentage of women experience sexual harassment and assault in the industry, with many not reporting due to fear of retaliation.

  • The lack of women in leadership roles can also impact the industry culture and decision-making processes.

Specific Genre Trends:

  • Women are most prevalent in the pop genre, while they are less represented in alternative and hip-hop.

  • However, there's a notable increase in female artists in Latin music, with women now accounting for 88% of top-streamed music in this genre.
